EMMA WINKLER

Emma Winkler Prins is an Amsterdam-based artist who channels her artistic expression through a diverse range of materials, from oil paints to serendipitous street discoveries. Prins finds power, comfort, and beauty within the absence of color. Her muse lies in places where light reflects in the darkness. Each of her artworks bears a distinctive touch of creative sensuality. Her latest collection of textured wall sculptures defy the main rule of art by purposefully inviting the viewer to physically engage with the artwork through touch.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

When I began oil painting, I bought a white and a black tube of oil paint, finding the other colors redundant because I disliked them. This decision wasn't just a defiance of the classical taboo against using black oil paint; it was the start of my journey towards embracing a life devoid of color. Within my oil painting period I quickly grew dissatisfied with the shades of gray I produced by mixing black and white, yearning instead to create a truly colorless space. I soon realized that without these shades, forming shapes on a 2D canvas was nearly impossible. This realization pushed me towards working in three dimensions.

I've always been drawn to abstract art, but my attempts in 2D never felt satisfying. Everything changed when I began experimenting with form and texture. This shift allowed me to explore a vast array of variations and intricacies without relying on shades of grey.

As a highly sensitive being, I am easily overwhelmed with sensation. Through my art I have come to realize that I find color overstimulating I thus strive to create a world devoid of color. There is a common paradox that black is associated with darkness and even depression, but I find solace in darkness because color overstimulates me. I strive to eliminate color in all areas of my life where I have control. Yet, I often fantasize about extending my monochromatic art into the broader world, beyond my controlled environments.

The ideas for my artwork often strike me during intense emotional moments and persist until the piece is finished. Each work embodies a specific emotion that is often unable to express in the English language. By shaping these emotions into physical forms, I can express them more clearly.

Through my art, I aim to offer a glimpse into an alternative reality. For those of us who are not neurotypical, creating our own world within the existing one is essential for functioning. This is my perfect reality—a space free from the overwhelm of color, filled with textures and forms that convey my most profound emotions.
